By building a community with their donors, food banks can update events and make announcements about volunteer opportunities, food in need, etc.

Match donations with food bank needs

Incentivization for better user retention and engagement

Build a donation community

Foodo is a two-sided mobile app for both food donors and food banks to create an efficient food donation process which will help decrease food bank staff workload in addition to maximizing food distribution to those in need.

Why is this project improtant? 🥺

We were dedicated to designing this project because…

One of my friends was relying on food banks during the pandemic. She has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people queuing up for food at the U-District Food Bank throughout the pandemic. People are becoming more and more dependent on food contributions to survive. She has witnessed soaring numbers of customers waiting in line at U-district Food Bank for food during the pandemic. More and more people are relying on food donations for survival.

The staff must take a very long time to negotiate with recipients and decide how to distribute the food in a way that would best meet demands because of the food bank's unequal food inventory, which makes it exceedingly difficult to get food to recipients quickly.

After we interviewed the food bank manager, Jack, we realized that they frequently receive a lot of donations for food they may not actually need, but few for food they do. For instance, they might get a ton of tomato cans when they actually need fresh produce.

Problem Statement🔍

How might we match individual donors’ donations with food banks’ needs?

Individual donors don’t know what food is in need

There is no platform available for food banks to immediately update donors on what they need the most on a daily basis.

Food bank inventory is unsustainable

The food bank doesn’t construct a database to track each item. Most of the time the donations are unstable, therefore the items shown on the inquiry form may be unavailable. Keeping track of the donations can help improve the whole donation system.

Food Banks are struggling with fundraising

One thing we did not know before and found out during our interview with Jack is that a significant part of the food inventory comes from grocery purchases. In order to offset rising food prices and yet satisfy the increased demand, food banks need much more budget for grocery purchases and to keep the organizations operating. However, a lot of people were not aware of the need for monetary donations to food banks.

Solution

Building a channel for effective, efficient, and enjoyable donation process

Our goal was to create a two-sided platform for direct communication between donors and food staff and a stable food inventory and ultimately encourage long-term contributions.
